Personal insolvency: costs and possible support
German personal insolvency involves several cost categories. Court fees, administration and privately instructed advice are separate. Available assistance and possible later payments depend on your circumstances.
Which costs may arise
Costs may include court fees and remuneration of the administrator or trustee. Preparation, creditor correspondence and legal representation may be charged separately. Scope, creditor numbers and case features affect the work. A headline price without a defined service scope has limited value for comparison.
Deferral does not fund every private service
Where assets cannot cover procedural costs, individuals applying for discharge may qualify for deferral under section 4a InsO. This requires an application and statutory conditions. Private fee agreements are not automatically covered. Possible later payments also belong in the assessment.
Questions before engagement
Clarify the contracting party, included services and charges for extra creditors or disputes. Ask about costs if you stop or prove ineligible. Written scope makes comparison easier. Establish who performs legal assessment and whether a suitable person or body provides required certification.
Separate German and international costs
EU insolvency may add travel, translations, genuine relocation and living costs. These are not equivalent to German procedural fees. Compare the total burden and possible continuing contributions. With high debts, we first assess which route is financially and personally workable.
